What Really Matters

Look at you two. My two girls. My babies.
Dear Ruby,

I am sitting here in a rare quiet moment watching my favorite Christmas movie, "The Family Stone". I adore this movie, even though every single year, it makes me cry. It reminds me of what is really important- love and family. In the movie, the family goes through two Christmas seasons. The first year, you see a family that has grown up together growing further into new relationships, and then the next Christmas, the mother is gone and you see how the family goes on, supporting each other, and is still strong. I think about how someday (hopefully long in the future) I'll be gone too, but my two girls will have each other, and all the moments we have made together.

This morning, Charlotte woke up with a cold. I am still struggling with how to take care of you both and not make you feel ignored or not as well cared for as before there were two little munchkins. As we were giving her a bath, you wanted to "help" and were spilling water all (and I mean ALL) over the floor. You weren't making a mess on purpose, and you earnestly wanted to help give your sister a bath.. not just trying to get attention. At first, I was a little angry at you for making such a mess. But then, just when I was about to yank the washcloth from your hand for being rough, I looked at you and Charlotte. And she let out a big goofy giggle. And then you laughed. And then you both laughed again. It was a moment of magic just between the two of you. It reminded me that what was really important was the moment, not the mess.

Loving My Big Helper Ruby Marie,

Your Momma.
